Navigating the U.S. immigration system can feel overwhelming, especially when processing times are long and immigration policies continue to evolve. While much of your case may involve waiting, there are important steps you can take to help avoid unnecessary delays and stay informed throughout the process.

At Casas Immigration, we believe that an informed client is an empowered client. Here are some practical tips to help you stay on top of your immigration case.

  1. Keep Your Address Updated

If you move while your case is pending, it is important to notify USCIS as soon as possible. Failing to update your address could result in missing important notices, Requests for Evidence (RFEs), biometrics appointments, interview notices, or even your immigration documents.

USCIS generally requires most non-U.S. citizens to report an address change within 10 days of moving.

You can update your address through the official USCIS Change of Address page:

USCIS Change of Address: https://www.uscis.gov/addresschange

USCIS also encourages applicants to manage address changes through their online account.

  1. Monitor Your Case Status Regularly

One of the easiest ways to stay informed is by checking your case status online. Using your USCIS receipt number, you can view updates on your application, petition, or request.

Visit the official Case Status portal:

  1. Keep Copies of All Your Documents
  • Maintain a secure digital and physical copy of important immigration documents, including:
  • Passports
  • USCIS receipt notices
  • Approval notices
  • Employment Authorization Documents (EAD)
  • Green Cards
  • Correspondence from USCIS

Having organized records can save valuable time if additional evidence is requested or documents need to be replaced.

  1. Respond Promptly to Requests

If USCIS issues a Request for Evidence (RFE), Notice of Intent to Deny (NOID), or schedules an appointment, respond as quickly as possible. Missing deadlines or appointments can delay your case and, in some situations, may negatively affect your application.

Always read every notice carefully and contact your attorney if you have questions.
